Rail

High capacity rail freight lines connect to major centres and make it possible to transfer heavy load, major volume materials quickly and efficiently. Canadian Pacific (CP) Railway, Canadian National (CN) Railway, and Ottawa Valley Railway (OVR) provide freight services to and from North Bay, and are well-connected to the United States’ rail system and to all industrial areas in Canada, ensuring that local firms have access to the global marketplace.

North Bay is one of the few communities in Canada with 2 short line railways headquartered in the City, Ottawa Valley Railway and Ontario Northland.

Headquartered in North Bay, the Ontario Northland Transportation Commission was established in 1902 and continues to play an important role in promoting sustainable economic growth throughout Northern Ontario. Ontario Northland ships over 35,000 carloads of freight each year for the leading businesses in Northern Ontario. They also operate a passenger train between Moosonee and Cochrane providing reliable and comfortable travel for people travelling to and from the James Bay Coast.

Ontario Northland also remanufactures passenger rail cars, locomotives and other equipment. They extend the life of transportation assets for companies throughout North America and have become the leader in this niche market.
